ArmoLIPID PLUS is a product that combines in a single formulation natural active ingredients for the control of blood lipids (policosanol, red yeast, and berberine), homocysteinemia (folic acid), and antioxidants (coenzyme Q10 and astaxanthin).
The synergistic action of policosanol, red yeast, and berberine allows a reduction in plasma levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides.
The formulation of ArmoLIPID PLUS is completed with a pool of natural substances with antioxidant action (coenzyme Q10 and astaxanthin) that, by supplementing the diet, help to counteract endogenous and exogenous free radicals and the peroxidation of blood lipids.

Policosanol is a mixture of natural fatty alcohols contained in the waxy matrix of sugarcane, rice bran, and beeswax. The policosanol in ArmoLIPID PLUS is extracted from the waxy matrix of sugarcane (Saccharum officinalis) using supercritical carbon dioxide, a process that preserves the original plant chemical structures, avoiding the use of chemical solvents. Policosanol inhibits the biosynthesis of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the enzyme responsible for mevalonate synthesis, from which endogenous cholesterol originates. Furthermore, policosanol promotes the elimination of blood LDL, increasing hepatic reuptake and metabolism. In extensive clinical studies at various dosages, policosanol has lowered total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol and increased HDL cholesterol. In all clinical studies conducted so far, policosanol has always been well tolerated.

Red yeast is produced by fermenting rice (Oryza sativa) with a particular strain of Monascus purpureus and has effects that favor plasma cholesterol control. The active principles of red yeast are mainly represented by monacolin compounds, which inhibit HMG-CoA reductase and thus the synthesis of mevalonate from acetate. Mevalonate biosynthesis is the fundamental and limiting reaction for endogenous cholesterol synthesis, and through this mechanism, monacolin compounds reduce blood cholesterol. Experimental and clinical studies have shown that red yeast significantly reduces total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.
The synergy of the mechanisms of action of policosanol and red yeast on the inhibition of cholesterol production (HMG-CoA reductase inhibition by policosanol and competitive inhibition by monacolin compounds) has suggested the clinical use of the combination policosanol (10 mg) + red yeast (200 mg equivalent to 3 mg of monacolin) as a dietary supplement for cholesterol management.

The results of controlled clinical studies and large-scale everyday clinical practice have highlighted the efficacy of policosanol + red yeast in significantly reducing total and LDL cholesterol in subjects with abnormal cholesterol levels (total cholesterol >190 mg/dL or LDL cholesterol >150 mg/dL). Over 16 weeks of treatment, the progressive and consistent reduction of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol and the increase in total-HDL were significant in favor of policosanol + red yeast already by the fourth week, reaching for total cholesterol 17.9% and for LDL cholesterol 18.8%. In subpopulations of patients previously treated with statins, diabetic patients, and hypercholesterolemic obese patients, similar effectiveness on cholesterol indices was observed as in the general population. The tolerability of policosanol + red yeast, documented in over 2000 cases treated in Italy, was excellent.

Berberine is a natural plant extract prepared from the bark of Berberis aristata. In in vitro and in vivo studies, berberine has shown to increase the expression of LDL receptors by increasing messenger RNA levels. Berberine does not seem to be involved in the transcriptional process but acts by increasing the stability of LDL receptor mRNA (LDLR mRNA). The increased availability of LDL receptors results in greater hepatic reuptake of plasma cholesterol, reducing plasma levels of total and LDL cholesterol. Additionally, berberine inhibits triglyceride synthesis through AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK).

The subclinical deficiency of folic acid is now the most widespread form of hypovitaminosis in the Western world and is caused by an unbalanced diet imposed by modern life.
Folic acid is necessary for the methylation of homocysteine and its conversion into methionine. A deficiency of folic acid causes hyperhomocysteinemia, which is an important cardiovascular risk factor.
ArmoLIPID PLUS covers the daily physiological requirement of folic acid, which is 0.2 mg, compensating for potential cases of deficiency or subclinical deficiency of folic acid. At this dose, folic acid is well tolerated and is useful for controlling homocysteinemia and for strengthening the lipid-lowering effects of the policosanol, red yeast, and berberine triad.

CoQ10 is a physiological constituent of our body involved in redox reactions involved in ATP synthesis and is therefore necessary for all chemical and mechanical energy processes. CoQ10 is especially useful for protecting the heart from stress, even in aging.

Astaxanthin is a powerful natural antioxidant, with an antioxidant activity 10 times higher than beta-carotene and 100-500 times higher than vitamin E. Astaxanthin prevents the peroxidation of plasma lipoproteins and eliminates one of the factors that cause arteriosclerosis. Astaxanthin thus exerts a synergistic lipid-lowering effect with those of policosanol, red yeast, berberine, and folic acid, strengthening the protective action of coenzyme Q10.

Astaxanthin, at the dose contained in ArmoLIPID PLUS, is well tolerated and does not require special precautions.
