Blackthorn (Prunus Spinosa L. quality Trigno) Buds

The Prunus spinosa quality Trigno (PsT), is a spiny shrub with deciduous leaves, belonging to the Rosaceae family, which can reach 5 meters in height. This plant has dark green ovate leaves, numerous white flowers, and spherical blue fruits. The flowering of the Blackthorn occurs between March and April, while its fruits reach maturity between September and October. The range of the Prunus spinosa quality Trigno geographically covers the upper and middle Trigno River Valley, flowing between Molise and Abruzzo through the provinces of Isernia, Campobasso, and Chieti. This area features a low population density, very little road traffic, and a limited level of photochemical smog and fine dust. The humidity level in this geographic area is very low. This ensures a high organic content with a constant supply, in the plant species, of nutrients and water. Regarding the content of pharmacologically active substances, Prunus spinosa has been studied by several researchers. Studies have identified the presence of flavonoids including:

• Quercetin (3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside);
• 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside;
• -O-β-D-xylopyranoside;
• 3-O- β-D-glucopyranoside;
• Caffeol (3,7-di-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside);
• Caffeol and quercetin (3-O-(4-b-D-glucopyranosyl)-α-L-rhamnopyranoside).

The phytocomplexes contained in this plant are able to exercise a powerful biological drainage and, more generally, purifying effect. In particular, extracts from the PsT buds can promote efficient drainage of body fluids as well as facilitate the regulation of sweating processes. Furthermore, the active compounds in Prunus spinosa quality Trigno are capable of supporting adequate bronchial secretions fluidity and, thanks to their astringent and antidiarrheal properties, to regularize intestinal transit.

Several experimental studies conducted on phytocomplexes extracted from PsT buds, used in the preparation of Trigno D, demonstrated a composition of flavonoids and other phytocomplexes that is absolutely original. In particular, PsT extracts proved more effective in exerting their draining and purifying action compared to other extracts of Prunus spinosa collected from different regions. This is probably due to the natural environment of growth, microclimatic conditions, and the methods of plant selection: spontaneous growth or cultivated under organic farming methods.
