FIPRONIL
Therapeutic Indications:
Treatment and prevention of infestations by ticks (Rhipicephalus spp., Dermacentor spp., Ixodes spp), fleas (Ctenocephalides spp) and lice in adult cats and kittens. Fipronil quickly exerts its lethal action on ticks, preventing the development of the parasite and the potential transmission of infections of which the tick is a vector. It is active against the main species of ticks present in the national territory, including Ixodes ricinus, responsible for the transmission of Lyme disease to dogs, cats, and humans. Fipronil acts on fleas by quickly killing the adult forms, thus preventing the laying of eggs and consequently new infestations. Thanks to its lethal action on adult fleas, fipronil effectively contributes to the control and resolution of Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) which, in cats, is caused by the sensitizing action exerted by the antigens contained in the saliva of these parasites. Fipronil also, with a single treatment, controls and rapidly and definitively resolves infestations by lice, particularly those caused by Felicola subrostratus, the chewing louse of cats. Fipronil eliminates fleas within 24 hours; ticks and lice within 48 hours of infestation.
Contraindications/Side Effects:
In the absence of data, do not use the product in kittens under 8 weeks of age or weighing less than 1 kg. Do not use in sick animals (e.g. systemic diseases, with fever, etc.) or convalescent animals. Do not use in rabbits, as there may be potentially fatal adverse reactions. Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or to any of the excipients.
Dosage:
One single-dose pipette of 0.5 ml/cat. Tick protection: up to 1 month after treatment. Flea protection: up to 5 weeks after treatment. For proper ectoparasitic prevention, it is advisable to perform monthly treatments during periods of greater seasonality. Fipronil disseminates in the epidermis, concentrating in the sebaceous glands of hair follicles, within 24 hours after application. Baths, rain, and shampoos do not interfere with the duration of activity of the product against ectoparasites.
Storage:
Store in a dry place at temperatures not exceeding 30 degrees C.
Warnings:
It is important that the product is applied in an area where the animal cannot lick itself and to take care to ensure that animals do not lick each other after treatment. Avoid contact with the animal's eyes. In case of accidental contact with the eyes, wash immediately and abundantly with water. Do not apply the product on wounds or damaged skin. In cats, there is no available information demonstrating how water immersion or baths may interfere with the activity of the product. However, based on data obtained from dogs washed starting from 2 days after the application of the product, it is recommended to avoid baths in the 2 days following the application of the product. If the cat has been treated prior to exposure to ticks, these will be eliminated within the first 24-48 hours after the attack, or before completing the meal, thus reducing but not excluding the risk of disease transmission. Once dead, ticks will fall off the animals; any remaining ticks can be easily removed by gently pulling them. Fleas present on animals often infest the animal's bed, blankets, and areas where the animal lives, particularly carpets, curtains, and upholstery fabrics. For optimal control of flea infestations, it is advisable to treat all cohabiting animals. Special precautions for those administering the product: the product may cause irritation to the mucous membranes and eyes. It is therefore advisable to avoid contact. In case of accidental contact with the eyes, wash immediately and thoroughly with water. If eye irritation persists, consult a doctor and show them the label. Avoid contact with the veterinary medicinal product by animals or persons with established sensitivity to insecticides or alcohol. Avoid allowing the contents to come into contact with hands. In this case, wash hands with soap and water. Wash hands after use. Do not touch the animals until the application site is dry; for this reason, it is advisable to treat animals in the evening. Overdose: in safety studies, no adverse reactions were observed in cats and kittens aged 8 weeks and older and weighing approximately 1 kg, treated once a month at doses five times higher than the recommended dose, for six consecutive months. However, the risk of adverse reactions may increase in case of overdose. The application of a dose higher than the recommended one results in a wet and sticky appearance to the fur at the site of application. However, in the event it occurs, this will disappear within 24 hours of application. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Side effects:
Transitory skin reactions at the site of application (scaling, local alopecia, itching, erythema) and diffuse itching or alopecia after application. Rarely, hypersalivation, reversible neurological symptoms (hyperesthesia, lethargy, nervous symptoms), or vomiting have been observed. If animals lick themselves, a transient hypersalivation may be observed mainly due to the excipients of the product.
